Q&A: Cosmetic Dentistry in Williamsburg, VA

We welcome you to learn more about our cosmetic dental treatments with answers to common questions from our patients:

What is the difference between Invisalign and Six Month Smiles?

We recommend Six Month Smiles for patients who want to address the teeth in front of the smile or in the smile line. Because Six Month Smiles addresses a smaller area of the smile, it will take less time than Invisalign. Patients who want to treat orthodontic relapse are also good candidates for Six Month Smiles. Invisalign offers longer treatment and benefits patients with mild orthodontic problems. Six Month Smiles uses clear braces and metal wires, while Invisalign uses clear removable aligners.

Are dental veneers permanent?

Veneers are a permanent procedure in that patients must be committed to covering their damaged or discolored teeth. Dental veneers require tooth preparation, which etches a layer of the enamel. Veneers are long-lasting, but patients may eventually need new veneers if they are damaged or discolored. Gently brushing teeth and avoiding staining foods and beverages can help veneers last.

Do you wear Invisalign during sleep?

Yes, because patients need to wear their Invisalign aligners for 22 hours a day, they will wear their aligners at night. We will not recommend Invisalign for TMD patients for this reason, as patients with TMD can clench and grind their teeth during sleep.

How can I brighten tough tooth stains?

If you have tried whitening treatment to no avail, we may recommend veneers or dental bonding. Some tooth stains are intrinsic, meaning they come from within the tooth. Dental veneers and tooth bonding treatments cover tooth discoloration with natural-looking, tooth-colored materials.

Is dental bonding treatment painful?

Patients may feel sore directly after treatment, especially if we have to prepare a chipped tooth for bonding treatment. We will recommend pain relievers for patients who feel soreness after bonding treatment. This soreness should be temporary and fade quickly.

Why does Six Month Smiles only take six months?

Six Month Smiles has a short treatment time because it does not address severe orthodontic problems or treat all of the teeth. We recommend Six Month Smiles for patients who want to address the teeth that show when they smile.
